The Making of a Professional
Web Site
"The Eight Phases of Successful
Web Development and Deployment"
The more you understand the stages of successful Web development and deployment,
the easier it will be for you to understand the issues involved in costing out your
site. Subsequently, this information will allow you to help us keep your costs to
a minimum since you will be aware of:
- (1) where the costs are and why they are
needed;
(2) which of these areas you can assist us in keeping your costs down;
(3) where our expertise at Advanced Internet Marketing is most required. You will
also understand that if someone quotes you a fixed price for a Web site and leaves
it at that, they are not doing justice to you or to this fascinating new communications
medium. It would be equivalent to an advertiser saying they will place your ad for
$500 without answering: (1) which magazine or newspaper of theirs your ad will appear
in; (2) how big your ad will be; (3) how long your ad will run for; (4) who designs
the layout of your ad, and if the advertiser, will that increase the cost; etc.
Phase One: CONSULTING
Advanced Internet Marketing is available to provide your company with a complete
Internet business presence audit. This could include a live demonstration of Netscape
and the World Wide Web, viewing and analysis of what your worldwide competitors are
doing on the Web, and recommending strategies for how your products or services can
benefit from your own Internet business presence. A discussion or demonstration can
also be given of what works and what doesn't as it relates to the design, development
and deployment of your Web site.
Phase Two: DESIGN
Design and development comprise the two stages of your one-time setup fee. The first
stage is design. To keep setup fees to a minimum, we strongly encourage our clients
to provide as much of the design in electronic format or on diskette as possible.
This includes understanding what your Web site layout will look like and providing
the text and graphics of that layout on diskette. If needed, Advanced Internet Marketing
is available to design your site for you -- from verbal discussion, from pictures
or text you provide to us on paper, from scanning your existing brochures, or via
any means from which you present us with the information required. For those looking
to design their own sites, Advanced Internet Marketing recommends that you take the
following Web site design tips into consideration:
- As in life, first impressions are everything.
Your home page should display quickly and cleanly. Assuming you have additional linked
pages off of your home page, from this home page it should be clear to the visitor
what this site is all about.
Graphics images above 30-50K bytes will keep some people away from your site. Think
twice before turning away users with slow modems due to your large graphic images.
Also, if providing us with pictures, carefully consider what the image will look
like after being scanned.
Avoid dull pictures, choose sharp images and contrasts -- not everyone has high-res
monitors.
Make the beauty of the hypertext links work to your advantage, not against you. Where
you are within your Web site and how to get from point A to point B and back again
should be obvious. Statistics have shown us at Advanced Internet Marketing that Internet
users do not want to get buried deep within a multitude of links, otherwise they
will either get lost or simply not visit your site again.
Phase Three: DEVELOPMENT
Development comprises the second part of your one-time setup fee. Unless you are
a Web developer, Advanced Internet Marketing will normally develop your Web site
for you after the design is complete. Development includes converting the design
to the language of the Web (HTML) and reformatting as required, adding hypertext
links as appropriate, and potentially integrating actual software programming modules
into your Web site (e.g. automatic e-mail response forms, custom-designed order forms,
database search engines, clickable buttons which automatically download to the user
a copy of your catalog, etc...). These optional modules can add tremendous capabilities
to your Web site and really make your site alive and standout from the pack. It is
typical that a Web site starts as a "basic" site and grows as the demand
warrants. As Unix and TCP/IP developers, Advanced Internet Marketing is available
to provide any level of sophisticated Web development as may be required.
Phase Four: DEPLOYMENT
After developing your Web site, Advanced Internet Marketing will deploy your Web
site on one of our high performance, multiprocessor Unix servers. Your site will
be made available to the worldwide Internet community over our high speed telecommunications
lines on a 24-hour, 7-day per week basis. Your recurring, monthly deployment fee
covers the use of these multiprocessor Unix systems to run your Web site; the use
of our direct, high-speed access links so Internet users worldwide will have fast,
responsive access to your site; security and backup of your Web site; and daily administration
of our systems to ensure continuous availability of your Web site to the Internet
community. The foundation of our business is the successful deployment of your Web
site!
Phase Five: PROMOTION
The inevitable question that everyone asks: "how do the millions of worldwide
Internet users find my Web site"?. The answer is promotion -- clearly one of
the most overlooked aspects for achieving successful Web site success. To summarize,
when your Web site goes live on one of our Web servers, there are two ways in which
the worldwide Internet users can find you:
- (1) by visiting Advanced Internet Marketing
and any of our Web sites;
(2) by discovering your site directly. In the first case, you will get a bonus of
"free" visitors due to the fact that we at Advanced Internet Marketing
are constantly, promoting and registering our site throughout the Internet; adding
new and interesting content to our site to bring in an ever-increasing number of
visitors;
(3) linking all our accounts and content together so that all visitors are aware
that there is much more to see and providing a mechanism for easily linking into
these other locations. This snowball effect gradually builds the number of "hits"
to all our Web sites. Additionally for our accounts with a local Las Vegas presence
interested in reaching the local Internet user base, Advanced Internet Marketing
holds ongoing discussions with the local press and hosts public access television
specials on the Internet.
In addition to these "free" visitors
described above, Advanced Internet Marketing feels very strongly that for maximum
success, each site should stand on its own merits. This is done by proper registration
and promotion of your specific site in areas appropriate to your prospect base. Keep
in mind that the Internet has no "top" -- no starting point. In reference
to Web site deployment, the Internet is simply a series of distributed computer systems
all vying for attention on equal terms on this worldwide billboard. As you are probably
aware, an etiquette exists on the Internet which must not be broken, particularly
in the area of being overly proactive with unsolicited "advertising". Nonetheless,
there is still ample opportunity to promote and advertise your Web site within these
guidelines. Your site should be registered with the popular Web search engines, via
multiple keywords if appropriate. Additionally, with over 11,000 very diverse newsgroups
being downloaded directly to our system every day, you should be exploring the many
opportunities that await the "promotion" of your site (be it a product
or service) by getting "involved" in a newsgroup(s) specific to your target
market. Promotional example: A Web site of ours, Info Las Vegas is one of the largest
online magazines in Las Vegas. Our site is registered in multiple Web browsers through
various keywords: search for Las Vegas, Info Las Vegas will be listed; search for
Gambling, Info Las Vegas will be listed; search for weddings, Info Las Vegas will
be listed... -- not everywhere, there's always more registration work to be done.
Additionally, Info Las Vegas takes advantage of the fact that we have over 11,000
newgroups dowloaded to our system every day. Among these are newgroups on travel,
gambling and shows collecting to name a few. As time permits, Info Las Vegas will
"participate" in these newgroups -- respond to specific "Las Vegas"
questions or post a listing within a newgroup making it known to those newgroup subscribers
that the Info Las Vegas Web site exists and where it exists (and of course, always
being keenly aware of the etiquette of the Internet).
Advanced Internet Marketing is highly experienced in the area of Web site promotion
and registration and is available to promote your site or train you (assuming you
have Internet access) to promote your site for yourself. As you can see from the
example, Web site promotion, if done properly, can be
an ongoing effort.
Phase Six: MAINTENANCE
Advanced Internet Marketing is available to provide any level of ongoing maintenance
that your site requires. Some sites are static (never change) and thus, require minimal
maintenance. Most successful sites are dynamic and require changes on a regular basis
(daily, monthly, yearly). It is very important for Advanced Internet Marketing to
understand how much maintenance your site will require -- how often you anticipate
changes being made to your Web site (changes in pricing, text, services being offered,
etc..)? For very dynamic sites (many changes per month, daily changes, or even multiple
changes per day), it is possible for Advanced Internet Marketing to design your site
such that you will be able to upload the changes to us directly by yourself. Note
that some basic training may be required on our part in order for you to properly
upload files to us. A personalized course is available for this (see Training). Once
the maintenance expectations are clear, Advanced Internet Marketing can work with
you to implement a program that is the most cost effective way of meeting the dynamic
requirements of your Web site.
Phase Seven: STATISTICS
One of the fascinating benefits of advertising through a Web site is the ability
for Advanced Internet Marketing to provide you with statistic and demographic reports
on your visitors. In its simplest form, this report can be the number of users who
visit your site each month. The report can be broken down further, and can include
such items as a breakdown by country, company or entity (domain) of who accessed
your site; explicitly what each visitor viewed at the time of their visit (e.g. user
X started at your home page, went to your order form, went to your company credentials,....).
Depending upon the nature of your Web site, this may or may not be relevant information.
If your Web site is a book, magazine or type of journal, this information may be
of very high value.
Phase Eight: TRAINING
Advanced Internet Marketing is available to provide any level of Internet or Web
site training on demand. Two of the more popular training sessions are: (1) how to
promote your Web site (one hour), and (2) how to upload files electronically (via
FTP) in order to do the bulk of maintenance work yourself (one and one half hours).
This latter session is for users who have a very dynamic site requiring a high level
of maintenance changes and prefer to be in control of these changes themselves.
At Advanced Internet Marketing, we are open to sharing any and all information with
our clients. Although this may be contrary to the norm, we are very confident of
the value-added we bring our clients and thus, believe that the more you know about
the nature of our business and this exciting new technology, the better our relationship
will be. We are committed to establishing long-term and mutually beneficial relationships
with all of our customers.
